Had a great time at SDCC2011! Met so many really cool people. Just getting the chance to say hello to a lot of artists and writers I really admire was a treat in itself. The creative people in the industry are some of the nicest and coolest people around!

Two of my friends got inspired to put together a sketchbook by next year...maybe I should get on the wagon and show off more of the stuff I've done that I haven't posted here and start collecting odds and ends for a sketchbook myself. Now...where did I put all that 'free time'..... (goes searching...)

The first feature film that I had the chance to work on will be in theaters starting Memorial day weekend 2011! (2 weeks from now!) So this is the only time I'll blurb about the little things I worked on that you might see in the film. Don't blink or you will miss them!

My job is to make gray models look real by painting them and doing techy stuff to them in my magic computer box. I surfaced a bunch of props mostly. You can see some of it in the trailer (Po's bandages, Master Shifu's scroll) Woks,lanterns,ropes,rickshaws,carts,baskets,buckets,backpacks, wagons, drums, instruments, trees, pots, vases, and other things that I can't say because they are part of the plot of the movie :) etc.

"Sooo many signs...." Yep did those too.

The coolest stuff I worked on were the Villains and Kung Fu Masters' weapons.
Swords, Throwing knives, axes, bow and arrows, knives, and the coolest characters' weapon, Master Thundering Rhino's Thundering Hammer. ;)

Haven't updated in awhile, but I've been kind of busy finishing a book. Something I've been working on with a few friends for a few years is finally finished. It's in it's last round of approvals and then it will be put up online for sale. All the money it makes goes to create scholarships for Ringling kids, so it was really just a volunteer thing. Started this awhile back after seeing the awesome movie Red Cliff. This is directly inspired by the movie poster but I made my own character and background. I kind of like how it turned out. I would work on it longer, but my wife is telling me it's time to go to sleep. I tried out my new signature for a new decade too.

This was about a 40 minute pose, charcoal pencil. Did some thumbnails before I got started. Learned some great shading tips from Karl Gnass that I will apply to future drawings. Didn't really get them into this one because it came at the end. I did some digital touch ups with this just to give it more of a contrasting value range because the photo (like all the others) is taken in bad lighting with my phone camera and then uploaded to my computer. One thing I really dislike is trying to draw eyes, lips and facial details with a charcoal pencil. No matter how sharp I make my tip I always end up making fat dark lines around the eyes! I'm trying for more then just value splotches, but charcoal line work is frustrating!

After I read through one of my old Mouse Guard books I decided to knock out a quick sketch/paint before I went to bed. Just sort of made these guys up out of my head, but they are based on the characters by David Petersen. http://www.mouseguard.net/

Before I did my thesis I had actually pitched a different idea about a Mouse and Frog that got into a misunderstanding that caused a war. Batrachomyomachy :Definition:The battle between the frogs and mice; - a Greek parody on the Iliad, of uncertain authorship.
Then during my research for character design I came across Mouse Guard by David Petersen. My original character so closely resembled his characters that it was one of the sticking points why that idea didn't get approved. And after seeing his designs it's hard to come up with a mouse character that is any better.

First figure drawing session of the new year. Great model. She was super skinny, but still curvy and did some great poses the whole class. She was dressed in a leotard and beret and had huge round sunglasses and a little revolver to complete the French Spy look. It was great!

Figure Drawing class taught by Karl Gnass. We did a bunch drawings where you look at the pose for 3 seconds and then draw out of your what you remember for the next 57 seconds. If you can't remember you make it up. It's a cool technique for starting to get line of action form and figure out what you know by memory.

The other project I've been working on mostly though is "The Ringling 100" a collaborative art book created by the donations of lots of highly talented artists. It's sort of like a year book or art for people involved with The Ringling COllege of Art and Design. After 2 years of getting it off the ground we are a month away from final submissions! Thanksgiving of this year is the cut off date. Then we have to organize everything for the judges and send it off to them. Once we get the scores back from them we can start laying out the book in December and hopefully be ready for print by January 2010. All the money from the books that get sold are going to go towards making scholarships for Ringling students.

I've been asked why I'm doing this and especially why am I doing it without getting anything in return. Well, first off because it is fun to create something, and if we can help someone else in the process then it is worth it. Secondly, I'm thankful for everything I have and all that I was given so in a way this is like giving back. Third, the book will be something I can look back at and be proud of and lastly when I say I'm going to do something I follow through on it no matter how long it takes. I"m just stubborn like that.

Well I've fleshed out some more background on some characters and I'm finding a way to structure the story starting from the conclusion and working my way backwards. Some things I thought were good before can't work out in the time line that I have created for myself so some earlier story points are going to have to be changed around a bit. Writing is a fun puzzle to solve even before you start.

So now that my life has sort of hit a rhythm and day to day things are mostly worked out I've decided to do something I've been putting off for a long time. I'm going to re-start work on a project that I began in 2001. Writing a book!

The first time around I got about 80 pages in and from most accounts it seemed to be the beginning of an entertaining story. It is totally a fantasy/sci-fi epic journey quest thing with good guys bad guys and everything that gets in between. In the EIGHT years that have gone by since I first began typing, my original idea has grown and changed and continued evolving in my head. What I had written before is now only a memory of what it has become. There are lots of very fleshed out characters with back stories, interweaving plot lines, triumphs, failures, love and loss, although I have never really had time to write it all down until now.

Even with everything else going on in my life I've always had this story brewing on the back burner. Ideas for characters and story points come to me usually at the most inopportune times, but because of that I've forced myself to memorize everything about it. There are very few things that have slipped my mind when it comes to this story, but I figure if it isn't something I can remember about it then it probably wasn't important enough to include anyways.

I've read a lot of interviews where writers and directors of the best stories out there spent years developing their characters and the story that brings them all together. Hopefully mine have been simmering long enough.

Maybe a year or two from now I'll actually have it mostly finished. I might try to do some artwork for it just for fun. Visual Development is just as fun as writing and it can sometimes help the process!

I'm actually working on an animated feature film.... WOW!!
Sorry this is kind of sappy, but this is my blog so I can do anything I want with it right? Well, some days I just like to stop and think about how thankful I am for where my life is right now. It took a long time, a lot of hard work, and just a little bit of luck, but I actually achieved my childhood dream. I'm damn proud of myself, just because not many people can say that. Some days it's just hard to believe that this is my job. I love what I do because I'm doing what I love!

Couldn't have done any of it with out the love, inspiration, and incredible support of my awesome wife Heather!!! Love you baby! and a big thanks to all of my family and friends that have helped us along the way.

Without very much advertising we already have over 100 submissions, but we need a lot more in order to make this the best book possible. Moving across the country to a new job sort of put a wrench in the works earlier this summer because I was so busy trying to get adjusted to the new life. Now that I'm all settled in I will have the time to get it running up at full speed.

Of course my point man Scotty will be doing a lot of the PR work back at Ringling, while I take care of the tech side online. Jorge is our silent partner. He's really there just to look good.

Just finished my first week at DreamWorks. It is such an amazing place! It's everything an animation studio should be! I can't describe just how happy I am to be here. I can have icecream everyday for free if I want to!!

The wifey and I have been busy moving into our new place. We had a headache of a move and had to fight tooth and nail with the movers for trying to over charge us for the stuff they did. Like oh I don't know....$65 for packing a large box that only had a dog leash in it!!!!! They ended up breaking stuff, dragging our mattress on the street, and losing one of our boxes somewhere in Kansas!!! This companies name was ATLAS. I strongly don't recommend them to anyone!

We had to ship my jeep cross country and it seemed fine until I tried to use my turn signals and found out they aren't working. Something must have rattled loose during transit. Of course the car movers say they won't pay to have it checked out because they didn't touch the blinkers.

The apartment we found sight unseen....actually turned out to be great! We lucked out there and we are very happy in our place and it's in a good location 2 miles from my studio. The dogs thought stairs were really cool at first, but they are going up an down a bit slower these days now that they realized they have to climb them every day.

I'm a college graduate! Again! Now I'm job searching. I have a few good leads right now, and two of them are going very well. Hopefully I'm lucky enough to have one of them want to pick me up. Both are amazing companies! Hopefully soon I'll know more. Now that school is out I'm having fun spending time with my wife, adjusting back to real life, and still finding time to do a little modeling and art on my own. I actually have started jogging again so my transformation back into a healthy person is beginning again! 6 months from now I'll be just like I was before Ringling.

Senior CA end of the year show is tonight! 4 hours long, but it's going to be awesome! I can't wait to see all of our classes films up there on the big screen!

I am currently job searching. It is not something I like doing because I want to finally get into a studio, sink my teeth in and just work on amazing things with an amazing team of people. I got a taste of that during my internship and I really want to get back to that world of creating entertainment and actually getting paid to do it.

There are two studios I am very interested in right now that I have applied for and if I was lucky enough to go to either one of them I would be excited beyond words. All I can do is wait to see how things turn out. I'm finishing up loose ends at school and trying to pack my life into boxes to move.

So just to take a break from all the highly detailed texturing stuff I've been doing for my Thesis, I decided to make a low poly environment model today. This was really fun to do. All together it only took a few hours and I'm happy how it turned out for what it is. I'm going to do a much more detailed environment next. Something Next-Gen systems could handle. Normal Maps and Baked lighting here I come! (Nerd alert!)

THESIS has been turned in! It's finally "done." I still have some things I need to fix and make better, but the grading part is over with. It is such a huge relief to have that deadline over with. I'll get some more stuff up in a little while, but I'll be sleeping a lot more and working on getting a job now. Graduation is coming!

I need to bring the rest of my shots up to par first and then I'll come back to this one again. After 2 months of battling with rendering errors and problems on the new render grid system they installed this year, I have finally managed to get an image that is acceptable for what I was originally envisioning. I've been able to render at home a little at a time with no problems, but when I would try to render at school it would never work correctly!! I would never have been able to batch render the whole thing at home before the final due date! Just as an experiment they reinstalled the old render farm from last year and after one attempt at rendering a scene it came back perfect. It turns out this ENTIRE TIME it wasn't my files that were messed up at all. It was the render farm!!!!!! The new farm is Linux based, the old farm Windows based! SO MUCH TIME WASTED!!!! ARGHHHH!!! I guess I did become much more versed in the intricacies of render settings that I tweaked countless times trying to correct problems that were never problems! I'm finally getting scenes back and making adjustments at a much better pace now.

The ground, mountains, and sand is all just temporary place holder stuff. It's also missing a large hangar door that will go right there in the front and center. I learned how to use ZBrush to create normal maps and displacement maps as well as create color textures. I'm currently working on finishing the tutorial to explain how to do this and bring it into Maya when you are using Renderman.

So I haven't posted anything in awhile because I've been working at my summer internship at EA Salt Lake during the day and working on my thesis at night. Not a lot of time for other things. I love animating and working for a video game company is awesome! I can't say anything about what I'm doing because of the contracts I signed, but I'm having a good time working on it. AS for my own stuff I've been coming up with a lot of ideas for things while I sit and model so I've been jotting them down and maybe I'll knock out a few sketches later on. If anyone has actualy read this far down congratulations! you are probably the first person to do so. I'm going to pick up painting again so that I might have some more things ready for next years megacon.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the people that stopped by our table at Megacon and even more thanks to those that bought stuff :) I had a good time at my first convention and I think I'll be back for more next year with a whole lot of new and better stuff. I have a whole year to come up with things. To anyone that came by I'd love to hear what you think I should improve on and what characters I should do more of. So here are a few paintings I did of some comic book covers that I like. Just did acrylic on wood. I didn't really get as much done for MegaCon as I had hoped, but I'll be working on more while I'm sitting there. Maybe I'll go back sometime and touch these up digitally...maybe.

My second DFA painting. It's a WWII secret mission where one soldier took on the Nazi's secret weapons. Since no one heard of this battle it looks like the soldier must have done his job!

Final character design for Ned Lands the space fighter pilot. His ship's name is the Harpoon and he's a hunter of sorts, so that's the connection to the original character. I'll proabably color this again in illustrator to get a different look.
